What's It Like?

As a Perinatal baby-care volunteer, you'll supervise and engage with babies and toddlers (from newborns to preschoolers 3 years old), so parents in the adjoining suites can focus on getting the help they need. First priority is safety, then fun.
Our play space has been generously renovated by IKEA and is nicely stocked with toys and books, bubbles included! But we highly encourage your initiative in organizing any fun, educational and creative activities -- share any ideas or skills you have with your volunteer supervisor.

We meet every Thursday evening (as a general rule), plus arrange special events and field trips from time to time. No minimum commitment, but regulars are greatly appreciated so our children, families and staff can get to know you!

Since Perinatal is largely a support group for new moms and we want to ensure the comfort of our clients, FEMALE volunteers ONLY please.

More about the program:

Perinatal is a parenting support program that helps inexperienced and at-risk parents -- pregnant or with babies up to three years old -- prepare for the challenges of parenthood. Perinatal hosts weekly peer support group meetings, and provides information, advice, resource referrals and in-kind donations, all with an emphasis on promoting positive parenting.

Danielle's Success Story:

Help is exactly what Danielle needed when she came to Perinatal at age 19. She was in early pregnancy, living with her boyfriend and highly fearful of following her abusive mother’s example. But during her time in the program, she gained the confidence to attend college and embrace positive parenting together with her boyfriend, who she eventually married. Today, Danielle is a successful CPA, actively involved with her daughter in cheerleading and Girl Scouts, and President of the PTA at her daughter’s school! And she has never spanked or hit her daughter.

Because of Perinatal’s success in helping at-risk mothers like Danielle, Heart of Florida United Way supported the program’s expansion efforts to help at-risk fathers, right in the next room!
